"OUR WOMEN OF SANDWICH"
(2020 Summer Virtual Exhibit)
SUSAN HAMBROOK GREENE
Honoring a Sandwich Woman...
Sue Greene is known in Sandwich by many as a volunteer, the lunch lady at Sandwich Central School, or a Sandwich Historical Society Board member. I know her as an amazing sister, partner-in-crime, and a wonderful mother to five, grandmother of eleven+ grandchildren.
Sue runs a little late. As a child, the school bus was always waiting, and our parents used to say she would be late for her own funeral. I hope she will be. She was late for her own wedding! One of the reasons she runs late these days is that she does so much. She bakes from scratch and delivers goodies to lots of family and friends, not just at the major holidays, but for board meetings and her sugar cookies appear on my counter for Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. She finds old photos and emails them to us on our birthdays-- and not just to her seven siblings, but in-laws, her kids, and friends. She weaves an Easter basket and sews a Christmas stocking for each new grandchild, and Nana never misses their events.
Sue loves history (she is really our family historian). She loves family. She loves tradition. She had her kids involved in the Society’s Junior Historians program and later, when they were grown, she volunteered on the Society’s Junior Historian archaeological dig programs. Now she serves as a trustee as did our Mom.
Sue loves family, and she never misses an opportunity to be involved in family gatherings. She has travelled all across the state to watch her kids play sports. Now that she has grandkids, she watches them in many of the programs offered in Sandwich, and she travels to Vermont to see the kids there too. Those things are likely true of many Nanas, but while doing all of this, Sue does so much more.
Sue is the first person to help out; she helped me move twice in the span of about three months. The whole family helped, but Sue was the one helping until the midnight hour for two weeks straight. Sue struggles with debilitating back pain and leg cramps, yet she was the person crawling up and into the storage pod to help reorganize it, to fit just a few dozen more boxes. She always helps me with Historical Society stuff - the Fair float, the booth, various programs, but she also helps the Sandwich Recreation Department and was on the Town's 250th Anniversary Committee. She was the one who thought of making me a bouquet for my wedding because I never even thought of it! It wasn’t just flowers; it was roses in my favorite color with Bells of Ireland, a blue ribbon, and a new locket holding old pictures of my parents! She thinks of all the little things that mean everything! And she does that for every one of us in this humongous family…and the family that is Sandwich!
My sister has a huge heart, cares deeply, and though quiet, has many opinions. When she counts you as a friend, you are lucky because she will do anything for you. She shows up, pitches in, problem solves, commiserates, and doesn’t complain…much!
