"OUR WOMEN OF SANDWICH"
(2020 Summer Virtual Exhibit)

FRANCES JULIA TRAUM MAUCH

Picture

Fran Mauch, officially known as Frances Julia Traum Mauch, was a woman who used her training as a nurse to help several generations of Sandwich students grow into healthy and resilient people.  After graduating from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, New Jersey, she worked as an Operating Room nurse, while marrying Ray and having a family.  In 1959, they traveled to New Hampshire for a vacation and ended up buying a 60-acre farm on Elm Hill Road; so began her long career as a school nurse at Inter-Lakes High School and then, when she retired and missed teenagers, at the Community School.  Fran also spent many summers as the nurse at Camp Hale.

Fran had a heart for young people; her students tell of finding in her nurse’s “office” a listening ear and a safe haven. She was especially known for helping troubled kids discover a sense of self-worth and direction during their tough teen years.  In the midst of this important work, Fran found time to contribute to the larger community.  She helped found the Sandwich Caregivers and Friends of the Library, served as a Red Cross nurse, and was an active member of the Sandwich Church and a greeter at the Historical Society.  For years Fran and her barn provided a center for storing and sharing all sorts of free medical equipment for the community’s use.  Fran will be remembered as a woman who dedicated her medical skills and her strong but down-to-earth spirit to serve her beloved community.
