Exposed, Unbanked, Weatherbeaten,
Knowledge Box: The Schools of Sandwich, New Hampshire 1802- 1950
People who have attended "one-room" schools share a bond and have
deep-seated memories of the experience. The local stories
recorded in this publication illustrate the range of those memories,
undoubtedly generic to all who have attended these schools. Some
recall the positive learning experience of being able to help those
who were younger. On the other hand, some stories recall the
overwhelming and immobilizing sense of panic for a young child to
have to raise his hand in front of the older students to ask to
leave the room.
Twenty-five schools are chronicled in
photos and words. Pictures of most of the schools and many pictures
of students are included as well as other items associated with
schooling in Sandwich in years past. |
