The Sandwich Historical
Society is initiating a capital campaign for our Quimby Park Project.
The Quimby Park Project is the cornerstone of the Society’s long-range
plan to have, by our 100th anniversary in 2017, complementary
facilities for our Society to meet its mission “to collect and
preserve the material culture and historical record of the town of
Sandwich, and to use these resources in service to the public through
educational experiences and outreach to the community.” The
building plan includes moving and preserving the Quimby Barn, and
reconstructing the historic Forbes House structure with an ell designed
to include a carriage shed for housing Sandwich’s Concord Coach;
thereby, creating space to exhibit and preserve Sandwich history.
Phase I has started! The
Quimby Barn has moved to its new location
across the street
(click here for photos of the move). The barn
move has been made possible by the support of the Town of Sandwich,
Quimby Trust and Sandwich Fair Association.
Work completed to date since the move:
a. North Wall: Replaced/installed three vertical beams, wall studs
on the first floor, exterior sheathing and clapboards, installed
three windows, 10' of sill and pulled the wall back into position.
b. East Wall: Replaced/installed 20' of sill,
installed one window and reframed the original barn door.
c. South Wall: Replaced/installed 40' of sill, replaced/installed
first floor wall studs, patched in new wall sheathing and clapboards,
rebuilt/installed three windows and one door.
d. West Wall: Replaced/installed 30' of sill, patched in new wall
sheathing and removed/preserved/stored clapboards for future use.
e. Basement: Replacing 90' of floor beams, installing nine
vertical posts and replacing floor joists as needed.
