In July 2009, the Sandwich
Historical Society sponsored a five day Junior Historian Program for students
entering 6 through 8th grades. Archeologist Sheila Charles supervised
students and adults in place-based community research and hands on field
activities. Students involved were Rowan Heard, Noah Reveley, Bridey O’Connell,
Zoe Frentress, and Alaina Duchin.
The field activities included
vegetation clearance, limited mapping and surface collection of artifacts
discarded by pothunters as well as excavation of four test pits. This was the
second year of the project and participants have compiled a growing collection
of historic, environmental and contextual information. Sandwich Historical
Society members Dr. Joan Merriman, John Perkins, Susan Green and Franz Nicolay
participated in the field activities.

During a sixth day, an
introduction to the project for students was conducted as part of an annual
Sandwich Town program, Five Days of Sandwich. This year students visited an
existing barn in Holderness to investigate the possibility that the barn had
been moved from the Smith site. The goals of the project are to map the area,
reveal past land-use activities, collect information about historical residents
and to inform the public about the history of the area, its changing
environment, and the people who lived there. |
